Violet

A purple lizard named Violet.  Isn't she beautiful?  I'm having a wonderful time painting these expressive eyes.

Fuschia

This dragon has her eye on something she really wants and there is no doubt she will get it with that laser-focused gaze.

Pearl

A friend of mine is part of a Dragon Boat team of all women who are Breast Cancer survivors.  Because of my Dragon theme, she asked if I could do a painting of a pink dragon to honor those ladies.  Of course I would!  In fact, I did more than one because, who wouldn't want a PINK DRAGON?!

Confetti

Ice cream, cupcakes, sprinkles, Jimmies... all things you expect to be pink, purple, and lovely.  But snakes?  Oh sure, there are 'snake people' who adore them and think they are beautiful but Average Joe/Jane would not think of them as lovely.  Would you ?

I have not even hung this painting in the gallery and it is already spoken-for.  Thanks, Friend!

Masquerade

Before I began this painting, I was thinking, "The colors in these paintings are getting a little crazy, maybe I should tone it down a little" and this was the result.  I do love color but tone it down apparently doesn't work very well in my sub-conscious.  I am pleased with this painting even if I didn't tone it down.

Two Point Landing

This guy leapt out of the shadows and onto the panel.  Too close for comfort, probably.  I like that about it.  I want my art to be a little frightening as well as beautiful... something you just can't take your eyes off (maybe because you don't dare take your eyes off it).

Have I mentioned how much I'm loving this series?  I'm working hard to remain 'loose' in my brush strokes... to not over-work each painting.  It looks easy but it's actually quite difficult in practice.

Dragon Grab

"Dragon Grab"  6" x 6" oil on Masonite panel.

Those claws look perfect for fishing.  Is the fish quick enough to get away?

When I first began my Serpent Series, I had made stencils of scales to be featured as a part of my abstract paintings.  When I talked about my developing series to friends, I also added descriptions of claws and teeth which had not yet made an appearance in my work.  Those descriptions led me to begin these smaller paintings as accessories to the larger, abstract paintings.

New Year's Eve 2016

Welcome to the end of 2016.

I have been doing a lot of studio work the past couple of months but I'm afraid the blog sometimes gets treated like the step-child.  If you want to see me where I'm posting more consistently, follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/karimelenartist/ .

30 Paintings in 30 Days.  Always a tough challenge.  I have started the challenge a few times but only ever made it through one time.  I have a different strategy this time around.  I know I can't paint every day and I won't be finishing one painting per day through this challenge so here is my strategy: I'll be working on several paintings at once this time and taking progress shots as I work.  You'll have something different to see each day, so come back and visit.  Hopefully I'll finish more than one painting during the month but if not, at least I'll be working at something.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year.

Well Loved Pots

Well Loved Pots

As a planter, I often buy seeds or new plants to put in my well-loved old planting pots.  One has a large chip in the rim and a small crack.  It still works fine and I think the chip and crack add character.

New Tide

 New Tide

The tide goes out.  The tide comes in.  And so it goes.

I adore the beach.  I was lucky enough to spend a few days there this month and they were spectacular days.

First Blush

30 Paintings of Comfort and Joy, Number Eleven

The first pink trees of Spring are Cherry, Flowering Crab, and then Redbud.  And they are glorious.  Gorgeous pin petals floating on the wind like confetti.  This tree is still in all its glory, not yet ravaged by Spring rains and wind.

Tea with Lemon

30 Paintings of Comfort and Joy, Number Eight

A bit of freezing rain this morning makes me extra glad for a hot cup of tea in the morning.  Yikes!  I hope it warms up a bit by the time I need to venture out after waiting for school delays to lift.

Lemons are the obvious star of this painting.  I think lemons and apples are probably the most common things artists paint (besides flowers?).  The lemons under the spot light certainly refreshed my studio.

I have gotten behind on the paintings but that's okay.  Life is complicated sometimes.  I still intend to do 30 paintings.

Cherry Cordial

30 Paintings of Comfort and Joy, Number Seven

Tools of the trade.  Do you ever fall so in love with something you've made that you just want to keep it forever?  That is this painting for me.  I want to share it and yet I want to keep it.  It's available for sale now, but that might change.

Reading Spot

30 Days of Comfort and Joy, Day Six

My comfortable spot for reading books, magazines, or watching TV.  It's also nice for a little nap, on occasion.

Shy One

30 Paintings of Comfort and Joy, Number Five

One bottle peeks out from behind, hoping to see without being seen.

I enjoy painting my small collection of glass bottles and vases.  Trying to capture the all the little sparkles and reflections is so much fun.

Excitement of 30!

"Pride of Baltimore"
Cage Free Series 008

Happy September.  Today starts the challenge to paint 30 paintings in 30 days.  I completed my first 30-in-30 challenge in January of this year.  It was a wonderful experience.  Not every one of my paintings in the January challenge was a winner, but I learned a lot and enjoyed it enough to go for it again.

I decided to use the opportunity of 30 paintings to work on my Cage Free Series since it will give me a nice step toward the goal of 100 (though I never said how long it would take to get to that 100).

Being from Maryland, I couldn't put off painting the Oriole for long, especially with the O's doing well in baseball (ohhh... don't let that jinx it....).  For those who are not from this area, let me tell you one thing that is so fun about visiting Camden Yards.  It is the song they play for the 7th Inning Stretch:  "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" by John Denver.  Maryland is barely in the South and Baltimore is hardly a Country/Western kind of town but the city LOVES that song played at the O's games and everyone has a great time.  Just a bit of trivia.
